Ginger is the pungent, aromatic rhizome of a herbaceous tropical plant, that is distantly related to the banana. The name comes via Latin, from the Sanskrit 'singabera,' meaning horns or antlers, which the dried rhizomes resemble. A surprisingly large fraction of the ginger trade goes to Yemen where it is added to coffee (as much as 15% of the coffee's weight).
